Thankfully, the days of trading security for convenience are over. This is clearly not a solution as no private individual has guests over often enough to compromise security for convenience. Again, the alternative is to create simpler, but less secure passwords. This means giving it to a guest in your house is needlessly cumbersome. These businesses must reluctantly secure the network with a password, hide their SSID, make things more difficult for customers and staff.Įven if you aren't a business, secure router passwords are long, complicated, and very hard to remember. Businesses like these, that don't serve the general public, do not want the risks of allowing access to that public.
But many other industries have fewer customers, they stay longer. Networks without password protection and with their SSIDs broadcast are the standard. To some businesses, with a quickly revolving set of patrons, such as grocery or department stores, this type of tradeoff has been largely unavoidable.
Not only is your network put at greater risk, but so are the users connected to it. This eliminates the need for your patrons to enter a password, but significantly decreases the security of the network. The easiest way for the users, up until now, was to have an unsecured network. As a business, you want to provide Wi-Fi to your patrons.
